The Price Pfister 974-491 is a pressure balance cartridge (also known as a balancing spool or Bodyguard unit) designed specifically for single-handle tub and shower faucets. It functions to continuously balance hot and cold water pressure, preventing sudden temperature fluctuations or “shower shocks” when water is used elsewhere in the house.
